Churches in Sutton Parish

St John the Baptist

The Street Sutton Petworth
01798869023

The Diocese of Chichester has loaded this entry, which has not yet been updated by the church itself. Details of A Church Near You in the Diocese of Chichester are on the diocesan website.

St John the Baptist's is bigger than most of the churches around Petworth. The nave was originally Norman, as can be seen by the herringbone masonry on the north side of the nave. The south aisle is late C12, with stately, plain, circular piers with waterleaf capitals. Pevsner thought the tower was c 1300. He also thought the chancel 'surpisingly showy for a Sussex village'. He admired the tracery in the windows and ignored the rather fine Victorian stained glass in them of prophets and evangelists. The east window includes significant incidents in the life of John the Baptist.
